IT Sligo Eco Learning

In January 2015, together with Crest and IT Sligo, Glenfarne Wood Products was commissioned to supply and install an Outdoor Eco Learning project for the Art & Design department at IT Sligo.

Mel Gavin and Leo Murray comprised the Crest team.

Bridie Gaughan and Silvia Gursinski comprised the college and Sean Clancy represented Glenfarne Wood Products.

The purpose of the project was to build a classroom for early childhood care and outdoor education, with an emphasis on sustainable construction methods, innovative product design and energy efficient technologies.

Bridie and Silvia outlined their requirements, Mel and Leo designed and planned the project and Sean and his team from Glenfarne Wood Products, manufactured and constructed the classroom. Using Scandinavian Redwood, sourced from FSC forests, the wood was cut and machined in the mill. On transfer to the joinery, the building was constructed in easy to assemble sections, toughened glass installed  and then painted with Drywood Coatings.

The foundation comprised Protim wood joists raised off ground and wooden deck flooring and handrail.

The manufacturing process commenced on February 16th and work on site commenced on March 2nd.

The project involved supplying a Classroom, Mini Glass House, Compost Bin, Garden Shed, Vegetable Planters, Sand Box, Rainwater harvesting and decorative fencing.

The project was completed on March 10th and in time for the commencement of classes on March 18th.
